Welcome to our latest edition |
Autumn returns, the holidays are over, schools are back and ‘normal’ routines resume for a great many of us. We hope the summer has been good for you and you are full of energy and ready for the rest of 2024. During the autumn months we’ll be experimenting with a lighter bulletin format and some changes to the design before a relaunch in January. Meanwhile, we’re pleased to bring you our latest selection of stories. You’ll see a growing focus on the people behind the news, too. We’re a community and the people in it are as important to us as news about projects and events. Please give us your feedback, too. We’d love to know what you think. You can speak to anyone in the euRobotics office team or send us a message via communication@eu-robotics.net. Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy our latest newsletter. The Newsletter Team |
This Newsletter has been written and produced by the euRobotics newsletter production team: Reinhard Lafrenz, Corina Radu (design), Marie Fortems (proof-reading), Inge Rehorst and Steve Doswell (editor and writer). All comments, enquiries and requests to reproduce content from the newsletter should be sent to the euRobotics Office team via communication@eu-robotics.net. Next edition: Deadline for contributions: 24 September. |

In profile: Radhika GUDIPATI |
In our latest profile of personalities within the euRobotics community, the Newsletter had the pleasure of speaking to Radhika Gudipati last month. In the latest stage of an interesting and varied career, Radhika has just moved to ARIA, the Advanced Research and Funding Agency, launched in 2023 as a research funding agency of the UK government. |

FLL: White paper launched on lab robotics euRobotics well-represented at Future Labs Live |
Future Labs Live took place in Basel at the end of June and euRobotics was well-represented both as an official partner and via the active involvement both by members of the euRobotics team and by several well-established euRobotics members. The reach of Future Labs Live was impressive, spanning start-ups and innovators from academia and a spread of sectors, many highly relevant to robotics, including Biotech, Pharma, Chemicals and Agrifood, also architects and planners. |

Robotic dexterity challengeYour chance to give feedback |
“What if, instead of just making robots smarter, we focused on making them more nimble too?” Many roboticists reading that will say: ‘Precisely!’ Robots are essentially physical and their dexterity and manoeuvrability are key elements of their usefulness. The quote is taken from a blog post published last month (August 2024) by Challenge Works, an innovation agency and the prize partner for ARIA, the UK government’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency. This sets the scene for a proposed innovation competition in support of ARIA’s Robot Dexterity Programme. Challenge Works developed an outline design for a competition but are now looking for feedback to help refine the competition model. If you’d like to know more and offer your own feedback, just complete the ARIA Robotic Dexterity Challenge feedback form. |

ERF 2025 is calling – but you’ll need to be quick! |
Caption: Planning for another memorable event: ERF 2025 organisers on a site visit to Stuttgart. After receiving 127 workshop proposals – a record number! - the ERF programme committee is now busy condensing these into an expected 55 final workshops.
Meanwhile the Call for Papers is still open but you’ll need to be quick as time is now short. Deadlines are: Accepted papers will be published in the series “Springer Proceedings in Advanced Robotics” with the series editors Bruno Siciliano and Oussama Khatib. The latest available information about ERF 2025 can be found on the ERF 2025 website |

Hosting ERF 2027 – final call |
Many of us have very positive memories of how well the local ERF host teams have risen to the challenge by delivering excellent ERF events over the years. Since the pandemic, successive hosts have equalled the quality reached by their predecessors. And then they’ve managed to add something extra, distinct and specific to their city. We saw that in Rotterdam, in Odense and earlier this year in Rimini. Next year we have no doubt that the Stuttgart team will rise to the challenge (no pressure...!). The following year it will be Stavanger’s turn. And in 2027...? In fact we don’t yet know where the following ERF will be – but the process has begun. Expressions of interest are invited for bid teams who are willing to host ERF 2027. The deadline for this first stage will be 13th September this year. Full details of the requirements and process are included in the Call for Hosting European Robotics Forum 2027. |

OCTOBER NEWSLETTER PREVIEW: ERF and Innovation Networks |
By the time of the October newsletter we’ll be counting down the final weeks to the start of European Robotics Week. We expect to have plenty to tell you about plans for national activities around Europe - and we’ll certainly have a lot to say about the Central Event in Zaragoza, Spain. The robotics community will also have an opportunity to assess the progress of the Innovation Networks at the Innovation Networks Summit planned to take place on 17th October. What is their scope? What are their plans? What are the opportunities? The newsletter will begin to explore these questions over several editions, starting next month with an Innovation Networks Summit preview.
Plus news from ICRA@40 which takes place later this month (see Calendar below) |
