Dear All The Lund University rector has decided to introduce a flight tax at Lund University. A number that has been mentioned is 20% of the cost of the flight ticket. Unclear when it will be introduced. It has also been mentioned that they will use information from BCD to calculate the tax. Don’t shoot the messenger. [Regler] A Champion Emerges from the Elimination Games!

A bit over nine months ago, a brave group of 17 players received their first target in the elimination games. While the goal was simple, the task was anything but: eliminate their target by making them say a secret word. Each player started with one target and one secret word—no more, no less. As players fell, the survivors claimed the targets of their defeated foes, each acquiring new secret words to wield in this relentless battle of wits. Now, after months of strategizing, deception, and linguistic trickery, the game has come to its conclusion. And there is one player left standing—one who played masterfully and strategically, single-handedly responsible for half of all eliminations made. We proudly congratulate our winner, Felix, henceforth known as the Lord of Linguistic Lures and the Wordsmith Supreme. Hello! As the study period is coming to a close, it might be time to look over our lab processes that have recently been used. Who better to tell us what works, and doesn't, and what needs to be looked at than you who have actually held the labs and seen the issues up close? We wish to book a small (10-15) minute meeting with you where we can discuss any potential insights that you may have into the equipment used in the labs. Our guest professor Bassam Bamieh will give a seminar tomorrow: Tuesday October 15, 13.15-14.15, Seminar Room Automatic Control KC 3N27 Speaker: Bassam Bamieh Professor Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Santa Barbara https://sites.engineering.ucsb.edu/~bamieh/ Title: Multiplicative Noise, Structured Stochastic Uncertainty, and Fragility in the Mammalian Cochlea Abstract: Linear systems with multiplicative noise can exhibit sometimes surprising behaviors that are not possible if only additive noise is assumed. This will be demonstrated with very simple low-dimensional examples, as well as examples from large-scale networks where multiplicative noise models stochastically varying network structures. A general framework of structured stochastic uncertainty is developed to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for mean-square stability from a purely input/output point of view. This framework is applied to study mechanical stability of the dynamics of the mammalian cochlea, which models the “mechanical spectrum analyzer” features of the cochlea, together with an adaptive gain mechanism which is responsible for the large dynamic range of human hearing. This adaptive gain mechanism appears to also be responsible for phenomena such as otoacoustic emissions and possibly Tinnitus, which appear to have mechanical instability origins.
